Wifi Egg Rental/ Phone Rental/ & Prepaid Card in Korea

I believed that most of us are carrying a SmartPhone in this century; and Phone Data Network connection is very important when ones in overseas.
Yes! I admit I can’t live without data even though I can live without social media at times.
(I’m very dependent on my phone to check news, read blogs and chatting with my friends~~)

Having Data connection in overseas is very important as it could help me to track my next location; and sometimes I used it to search for ideas to travel around randomly when I’m bored. =X

The Top 3 service provider in Korea are:
SK Telecom
KT Olleh
S Roaming

We all know that the network connection in Korea is superb, considering on the best.
No doubt! They had come out with a Pocket Wifi Rental for foreigners to rent it during their stay.
(Usually its call WiBro or Egg Wifi as the design origins from the Shape of an Egg)

Here’s a comparison rate that I had complied from the 3 service provide

(click photo to enlarge)

From what I know in the past, there’s only Phone Rental available to travellers. Now, they provide SmartPhone Rentals as well!
You can simply just make a reservation online and rent it for your trip.
(Highly recommended this IF you need to use both Data and Local Phone Calls in Korea!)

Phone rental

and And AND..
If you just simply don’t need anything, you can just grab a prepaid card that’s available over at SRoaming at the price of 28,600k won.

(PS: Just FYI, I would say the prepaid card does depletes very fast. =X) (click photo to enlarge)

Check out the 3 Service Providers Website Rental Rate here:

SRoaming – http://www.sroaming.com/eng/main.asp

KT Olleh – http://roaming.kt.com/renewal/eng/main.asp

SK Telecom – http://www.skroaming.com/en/

Enjoy the superb speed in Korea! =D

PS: I had tried SRoaming Pocket Wifi and the network speed is very good!
Alternatively, IF your service provider is Singtel (Singapore), they do provide Data Bridge Roaming to South Korea at the rate of SGD15/day or SGD60 for 5days!
It’s quite a good deal as well though.

  1. Thanks for the info! Your entry is very informative. I just have a few questions. I’ve checked S-Roaming’s site and saw that it has an option to avail of a portable charger for the Pocket WiFi, did you avail it? Does the battery of the device drain fast with continuous usage within a day? Also, I’ve read from Incheon Int’l Airport’s website that S-Roaming’s booth for rental is open up to 10:00 pm only. Our plane is set to arrive at around 9:00 pm but since we still have to claim our baggage and go through foreign exchange, I’m quite worried that I won’t be able to get to the S-Roaming booth on time. By chance, would you know if they will wait for you once you have made your reservations even if it was past their operating hours?

    1. Hi Theresse,

Well, the portable charger is a must. The pocket wifi works like your mobile phone that needs to be charge. If you off the data when you’re not using it(eg shopping), I’m sure the battery will not depletes that fast though.^^
AT the same time, I guess maybe you might have made a mistake. S-Roaming over at Incheon Airport operates 24hours while the other 2 Telcom operates till 10pm. ^^
      Hope it helps! (:

Do you have any information to the S roaming counter changes in Incheon airport? I can’t seem to locate their counter booth on the Incheon airport website and the S roaming website did not state where to collect the wifi egg as well. Any information to collection and return of the S roaming wifi egg would be great!

I went to check out at the airport regarding their new location as well. Apparently they had shifted (but yet to displace the location as they only put up a notice at the old place) though. I guess you might want to email them and asked about it?

I only know that you could return at 1 of the temporary counter at basement 1 at Incheon Airport.

As for the rental fee, they will only charge it upon return. (:
As for the deposit fee, your CC will be charged temporary for it when you get it from them; and they will void it off once you return the wifi egg without any damage of course. (:

Im a bit confused as to why i didnt need to give any credit card information or pay for anything. There were no further instructions as to the steps i need to do to collect the pocket wifi or any selection process for me to pick the pocket wifi.

Not a problem on the reservation.
They will only need to swipe your card(on the spot) upon collection of the Wifi Bro.
If You had recevived the email upon reservation, the Telco would do their job on the service. 🙂

Thank you for such an informative post! I’ve a few questions:
I want to rent the wifi egg under Olleh. But when I accessed their website, the location stated only “rental phone pick-up”, but I don’t want to rent a phone. I want to rent the wifi egg. 😦
So my 1st question is: where do I pick up the wifi egg then?
2nd: There are a few types of wifi devices available for rent, but through the online reservation, I don’t to choose it. Do i choose what I want on the spot upon arrival?
3rd: Olleh’s wifi device provides data in most part of Korea right?

    Once again, thank you!

While choosing, there is the option to choose Reservation for phone(left) and Pocket Wifi(on the right) right below your Useage Period(date of rental)

2 – For the choices, they will email you once you had filled up the online reservation form from the website.
Do reply to them again(via the email) and tell them which device that you would like to make a reserve on. ^^

      3- Yes, it does. 🙂

I can’t really advised how good on it, but if you prefer and uses more wifi than calling in KR, I would recommend you to get the wifi bro instead of the phone rental. 🙂

      payment –
There is a NEED for you to swipe your CC for the deposit fee(highly recommended) as if you pay a deposit in cash, you need to add in additional 100k as shown on the figure above. Your CC will be only be charged temporary for it(deposit) when you get it from them; and they will void it off once you return the wifi egg without any damages.

As for the rental fee, they will only charge it upon return. (:

S-Roaming over at Incheon Airport operates 24hours while the other 2 Telcom operates till 10pm. ^^

I just have a quick question regarding Activation. I’m after SIM card rental for data use and have narrowed it down to 3 carriers. Olleh, EG SIM, and Sktelecom.

Do you know if there is a waiting period for activation on SIM cards for travellers? I have been reading you may have to wait 3 days after entering the country for the SIM to activate. Is this still the case or is this outdated information?

And… Do you reckon that SKtelecom will care if I use a SIM Card cutter to cut their sim to fit into my iPhone 5? They don’t provide a nano-SIM.

    Thank Love 🙂

    1. Hi Safal,

Regarding to your enquiries, I’m not very sure what do you mean via the waiting period of the activation on SIM cards.
Do you mean the prepaid card purchase via in Korea, or you mean by using your own SIM card with data roaming from your country?
-If you refers to the prepaid card purchase via in Korea – once you reset your phone, you will be automatically connected to their sim-card network and you could used it staight away.
-If you refers by using your own SIM card with data roaming from your country, I guess you might need to check this information with your home-ground telco company.

At the same time, I’m not very sure IF they can a SIM Card cutter to cut the sim card to fit into IP5. I guess it would be better for you to leave a comment on their Q&A page on this enquiry. 🙂

  17. Hi there!

I stumbled upon this website and found it very helpful! However, I got a bit confused when making a reservation for the egg thingy with KT Olleh. I’ve emailed their customer service and they said that their Incheon store only offers phone rentals, but I want to rent the mobile wifi, and when I tried to make a reservation on their website, it says that I could rent the mobile wifi in Incheon, I’m kinda confused here, lol. Is it possible to rent the mobile egg in Incheon?

Anyway, I’ve made the reservation, but then the website turned all Korean and only gave me a confirm button after I made my reservation, so I clicked it. After that they sent me some sort of confirmation note, and they did not give me any options on which device would I want to use, and I got even more confused afterwards. So what should I do next? Should I just print out my receipt and submit it to the counter upon my arrival or should I make another reservation?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Amira,

So sorry for the late reply.
I would suggest that you could try sending an email to the Olleh Cust Care on the confirmation note, telling them that you’re unsure what are the content.
At the same time, do tell them your needs for the rental (eg. how many days, which type of device etc) and ask them to amend the changes if it is not stated in the original confirmation slip.

Lastly, do state in your email that you would like to collect the wifi bro from the Incheon Airport counter. I believe they will be able to make the arrangements on that. 🙂

1- Pocket wifi is recommended over smartphone as it could be share among friends(top to 5users) and the battery depletes slower compare to the phone.(Imagine if you on the smartphone wifi and share among 3ppl..the battery would run out super fast!)
And I suppose you’re not going to make a local call/text in Korea, thus it would be much better to grab the pocket wifi.

You can rent it from Gimpo Airport if you’re flying over from there to Jeju. ^^

      Hope it helps~
      Cheers!

  28. I recently tried renting a korean olleh wifi egg in Singapore from a company call y5buddy. Quite convinent as they are located in town near to my office and they allowed me to collect the egg 1 day before my departure. Price wise is not too bad eithet at $8 daily rental. Connection was very good in Seoul an Jeju but dropped when I got to Panju, either than that was fine. I guess nothing is petfect.

  29. Hi! I read your blog and found it really informative but i am still kinda confused! I would be going on a 4days trip to Korea and would like to know if i could buy a prepaid sim card and use it for mobile data immediately in Korea on the day of arrival, and where can I get it? And is it better to use the wifi egg instead? So sorry if u mentioned this on your blog already because i read the comment section as well but i’m still confused xD

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Vanessa,

It actually depends on your personal self. If you prefer only data, you could just make reservation (online)for the WIFI Egg nd rent it over at the counter at the airport.
If you need to make any local calls/sms(in korea),or you does not have any credit card, I would recommend you to use prepaid sim card instead.

      Hope the answer helps! ^^

  31. Thank you for such a clear post! You mentioned you rented an egg wifi from S roaming before. I reserved one 2 days ago and chose the option to book and pay later. The site also asked me to put in my credit card details, but i did not receive any email confirmation until now.

Do you remember how long it takes before you receive a confirmation email? I was kind of expecting it to be immediate.

    1. Hihi,

I remembered someone faced that same problem as you, but it was sort of ‘reserved’.
Maybe you would like to send an email to Sroaming and make a double confirmation with them. 🙂

      Cheers!

  32. Hi yyann!

Thanks for your reply! Ah I see.. so I am not the only one. I’ve emailed them and am still waiting for their reply.

Just wondering… if all else fails, and I don’t turn up to collect my reserved egg wifi, they won’t charge me right?

  33. Hi yyan,

Just wanna ask, I went to SKroaming site to check about the wifi router renting details, but they have this two model (clr-1000ks & amr510l) which seems to have the same features. Can I know which is better? Or maybe if you had used both before and know what are their differences since their pricing are different? =)

    Thank you !

    1. Hi KT,

Actually both model works the same way except that
      clr-1000ks – Can connect up to 7 users/items(phone/ipad etcc)
      amr510l – can connect up to 3 users/items

      Hope it helps! ^^

  34. Hello there, thank you for your information!
There is one thing that I want to make sure though. I reserved the wi-fi router under my name, but the cc has my dad’s name and he won’t be there with me. Does this mean they won’t accept it? If so, do you know any other alternative to get internet access in Seoul? Thank you so much! ><

    1. Hi Mandy,

Yes, the owner of the credit card must be present at the counter.

Alternatively(if you’re in Singapore), you can rent it from CHhangi Airport T2(read my entry) or you can purchase EG Sim card online(via their website) and collect it at Incheon Airport(not 24hts).

      Hope it helps! ^^

  35. Hi Yyann

I saw Olleh having a Wibro plan, $11k won/10gb/mth, without contract.
    http://www.ktexpatblog.com/?page_id=52

I believed the condition is that we have to buy the egg ourselves, which may be around $92K.

Should someone pass me an egg, can I apply the Wibro plan, $11k won/month, and use the WiBro plan for my smart phone?

I was thinking if I buy the egg, and do a reselling, this would take good advantage of the cheap WiBro plan at only $11k per month.

    1. Hi,

Foreigners/students/tourist are not allow to purchase.
You need a valid visa and pay slip to show to the CSO upon purchasing it.

      Hope it helps!

  36. Hi Yyann

Really appreciate your informative blog. Thanks !!

I am looking to rent a SRoaming Pocket WiFi LTE for my upcoming Dec trip.

I’ve tried to ask SRoaming but not able to get any confirmation if daily rental fee of US$7.80 INCLUDES unlimited data usage for the day.

I am also confused by the service charge rates listed in this page – http://mobilepop.co.kr/main/newpage.php?f_id=sub06_2. Not sure what this service charges is for

Hope you can help to clarify.

    THanks

    1. Hi PY,

Thanks for the compliment and reading this little blog of mine.

I had a q uick check on the website as provided by you, the current offer rental rate which SRoaming is offering at (USD $7.80) does icludes unlimited data usage for the day; BUT, it DOES NOT includes the 1-% VAT(gst) charges, as well as the deposit amount which you need to pay before hand.(deposit will be return back to you once you return the WIFI Egg device)

Hope it helps in your understanding!

      xoxo,
